[OT] VS2022 Replace in Files problem

Folks, about 2 months ago, VS2022 *Replace in Files* stopped working as expected on my work PC, in VMs and on my laptop. After hours of experiments I have determined that Replace in Files will not alter any "external" files that are not part of an open project. The file types, folder locations, user account, recent minor updates, dialog options, /reset, etc make no difference. Can someone do something like this in a recent VS2022 release ... Create a C:\temp\junk.txt file and put the word FOO inside it. In VS2022 with *no projects open*, run a Replace in Files over the temp folder and file and see if you can change FOO to BAR. Does the txt file get updated? Not for me. Below is a sample of my attempt which says it made 1 change, but it's a lie. Is there some obscure option I've accidentally toggled? Hawkeye replacement - find control and get instance name and maybe other properties

Hi all, Does anyone know of a current tool that can be used like Hawkeye used to be - specifically I want to be able to run a winforms app and then use the tool to target specific controls to see what their instance name is. I am fixing a bug in a legacy program and half the struggle is working out where the meatballs are in all the spaghetti. I am running VS 2022 Professional, so no access to enterprise tools. Blazor deploy error

Folks, I've been trying to deploy a Blazor app from Visual Studio 2022 for hours without success. I'm doing the usual right-click-publish that I've been doing for about a year, but yesterday it stopped working, and even this morning with a fresh mind I cannot make any progress. I've changed the pubxml options, compile options, etc. Absolutely nothing works. All I get is the generic and utterly useless error below. Normally changing an FTP or Deploy settings :wakes it up" and it works, but not this time. I'm about to delete the publish profile and make a new one, but I'm sure it's a waste of time. I'm wondering if some hosting versions have changed, or something is deprecated, something global I'm not aware of. Has anyone been through this? -- *Greg K* [image: image.png]

It's that time of year - F#

Hi folks, It's been about a year since I asked, so here it is again. Does anyone know of any F# work being done in Melbourne, or anywhere in Australia? I've managed to do some small F# helper apps for my employer, but 98% of what I do is C#. I'd really love to find somewhere that uses F#. On the plus side - F# has helped improve my C# approach dramatically, and C# is constantly introducing more functional ideas (although discriminated unions and active patterns would be lovely). So, anyone know anything? Cheers David

53-bit double

Any IEEE 754 bit-boffins here? A popular way of generating a uniform random double is to something like this: uint u = *[32 random bits]* double rand = u / (double)uint.MaxValue; However, double has 53 (52?) bits of precision, so you get a deficient rand that can't produce a continuum of possible values. I found some code which claims to convert 2 x 32 bit randoms into a fully random double, like this: uint u1 = *[32 random bits]*; uint u2 = *[32 random bits]*; uint a = u1 >> 5, b = u2 >> 6; return (a * 67108864.0 + b) * (1.0 / 9007199254740992.0); Can anyone explain this magic? C# 6+ Random algorithm changed

TGIF folks, FYI - I discovered by accident yesterday in this article <https://blogs.siliconorchid.com/post/coding-inspiration/randomness-in-dotne…> that the algorithm used by the Random class has changed. Historically it has used the Knuth subtractive algorithm <https://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=2221790>, which is old and respected, and reasonably simple. It holds its internal state in a seeded int[56] array (I don't know how it scores on cruel tests like BigCrush <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TestU01>). It's been replaced with one of the set of new *xoroshiro* algorithms, which I didn't know about until yesterday. The code is so short that you can't believe they actually work and produce results that pass tests that even some of the famous ones like Mersenne Twister can fail. I'm just amazed by the brevity and quality <https://prng.di.unimi.it/> (C code links top-right). ILSpy shows how Random has been completely rejigged to use the new algorithm or fallback to the internal Net5CompatDerivedImpl class. *Greg K*
